Perfect Your Food Shots For The ‘Gram With 5-Day FUNN-Tastic Food Photography Workshop

Aspiring young creatives are being presented with the perfect opportunity to polish their food photography skills by FUNN – a Sharjah-based organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting media arts learning among children and youth. The entity has opened registrations for its annual FUNN-tastic Winter Camp titled ‘The Secrets of Foodography’, being held virtually from December 20 – 24.The camp will feature a series of informative workshops designed to teach shutterbugs, aged 12 and above, the intricacies of food photography.

Delivered by photographer Fatma Omar AlHadhrami, the workshops are in line with FUNN’s mission of empowering children and youth by nurturing their creativity in the field of media arts.Beginning with the basics of photography, participants will learn the technical aspects of clicking mouth-watering pictures of food, including depth of field, choosing perspective and angle, planning props and garnishes and creating texture.

Over the course of the five-day camp, workshop attendees will be taught how to create their own backdrops to shoot food and beverages, focusing on a different kind of food or meal each day. On
Day 1, they will be familiarised with their equipment and pick up basic skills including backdrop set up. Creating great pictures of breakfasts will be the subject of Day 2; pizzas, fries, and burgers on Day 3; cupcakes and doughnuts on Day 4; and hot and cold beverages on the final day.

At the end of the workshop, participants will enter a competition, with the best works being awarded a surprise gift pack.

Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of FUNN and Sharjah International Film Festival for Children & Youth (SIFF), said: “As part of our commitment to developing Sharjah’s and the UAE’s creative industries by empowering the nation’s youth in media arts, FUNN is organising this specialised winter camp, which will offer participants a golden opportunity to learn to take great pictures of food, the fastest growing and most viral category of this art form. Professional food photography is a collaborative effort, usually involving inputs from art directors, photographers, and food stylists. Through this camp, we aim to give the participating children an overview of what it takes to specialise in this high paying genre of photography, while honing their shooting and photo editing skills.”

She added, “FUNN aims to offer children and youth the right platform and training to explore their creative potential and learn about the professional side of photography. This camp has been crafted to help young photographers take a more specialised approach to the art form.”
