The British Council Opens More Computer-Delivered IELTS Test Centres Across UAE

The British Council is opening three computer-delivered IELTSÔ test centres across the UAE this week, meeting a growing demand for the world’s most popular high-stakes English language test. The new openings in Al Ain, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, demonstrate an increased recognition of the role of English language to empower young people to compete in a globalised workforce.

UAE test takers are one of the fastest adopters globally for the new computer-delivered test, driving the need for more centres in new locations across the country. The openings include Al Ain University, New Horizons Training Institute in Dubai and University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi. The new centres will give students more choice of computer-delivered IELTS locations, adding to existing centres in American University of Sharjah and TEPTH in Dubai.

According to the British Council, English language proficiency is an essential skill for navigating a global workforce and breaking down barriers in business. With the UAE government Vision 2021 placing significant emphasis on future skills to unlock the potential of UAE youth and further diversify the economy, a high proficiency of English language can help empower the pool of Emirati talent.

Deep Adhikari, Deputy Regional Exams Manager at British Council commented: “Computer Delivered IELTS will provide candidates with flexible access to the IELTS Tests across the country.

It is already increasing convenience, mobility and choice for all test takers in the UAE. A strong command of English language for UAE youth is important to build a strong workforce. We are committed to supporting this development of English language across the UAE through our range of assessments which help candidate prove their ability. Students, learners and professionals can be confident that they are taking the same trusted English language test, but with more choice over how, where and when they take it.”

The British Council’s white paper on Future Skills outlines the challenges for the UAE youth, reporting that many graduates lack technical skills including English language – despite the fact that 75% of people across business sectors believe that STEM related qualifications are key for the future. Proactively growing UAE talent with these skills is an approach driven by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, to meet an increased demand for highly skilled workers. With an English language qualification such as IELTS, UAE Nationals can prove their skillset and gain entry into university places around the world.

The new opening in Al Ain University is the first computer-delivered IELTS centre in the city, helping students to take IELTS at a more convenient location.

Dr. Abdelghani Ammar Remache, ELC Director at Al Ain University of Science and Technology said: “Ensuring that our students are equipped with the tools to carve their own path in life is part of our duty of care as a University. We are delighted we can extend our offerings through the computer-delivered IELTS test centre in our two branches in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi campuses and look forward to a very successful first session.”

IELTS examinations help young people to prove their English ability and unlock their future aspirations – whether that’s for their career, study or migration. It is the world’s most popular English proficiency test, with three million people opting for IELTS examinations worldwide.
