Life unplugged: Understating Sustainability In The Indian Ocean Islands With Constance Hotels And Resorts

The Indian ocean nations are rich in underwater reefs and sea life, with picture postcard-perfect beaches, verdant natural forests and diverse flora, the region’s nature is a wealth that needs to be preserved. Dotted along the Indian ocean, Constance Hotels and Resorts is constantly evolving its environmental measures to protect marine life and nature at each of its properties.

Since 2014, several projects have been put in place to make the hotels more ecological. Energy and water saving, recycling, composting or protection of the fauna and the flora are the initiatives that allow Constance hotels in Mauritius, the Seychelles and Maldives to receive the Green Globe certification for the third consecutive year.

All Constance Hotels and Resorts’ properties have been built with minimum disturbance to the vegetation and natural watercourses. In addition to this the stone and wood that are the basis for construction blend into the lush natural vegetation that surrounds it, and the landscaping is designed to use only indigenous plants. The Group also works closely with NGO’s to educate the community on environmental matters such as the reduction of litter, illegal dumping and encroachment as well as regular clean-ups and reforestation initiatives.

Energy savings are incorporated within the property, for example, on the use of air conditioning and water used for swimming pools, which use a System Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) process. Rainwater is collected and used for watering the plants around the resorts, while Constance’s resorts in the Seychelles and the Maldives; namely Constance Ephelia, Constance Lemuria, Constance Moofushi and Constance Halaveli have their desalination system running through photovoltaic energy. To minimize waste, the resorts implement a 3-R system (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), whereby organic waste is used for composting and used for plants located within the hotels or distributed to local growers.

Constance goes further in the Green Globe initiative by protecting the nesting sites of sea turtles, rehabilitation of new coral reefs or mangrove planting on the banks with the support of international scientists and wildlife foundations with the necessary training provided to the employees, customers and suppliers.
