IHC Supports ‘Walk The World’ 2011 – Drive To End Hunger
Under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace and Chairperson of the International Humanitarian City, HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the “Walk the World” event aims to raise awareness & funds for global hunger, the most serious issue facing the world today. In fact, global hunger is the one of the top ten health risks we face, killing more people every year than TB, Malaria and AIDS combined.
IHC welcomes all efforts to encourage humanitarian operations. The IHC model is currently the only one of its kind & is based on the strategic, infrastructural and geographic advantages that are provided by Dubai being a key trading centre and leading commercial hub. We create a platform for networking and information exchange, connecting nonprofit with commercial organizations, donors with volunteers and government organizations – all working hard together to help those in need.
By supporting the annual “Walk the World” event in aid of WFP’s efforts to fight child hunger and malnutrition, IHC aims to raise awareness in the local community and generate financial support to fight & end hunger around the world.
This year’s campaign, launched from Dubai, is a joint effort of different government sectors and humanitarian organizations. It could not have been possible without Dubai Municipality, which has provided the required facilities for this event, and the Red Crescent, which works hard & cooperates with WFP to maximize the success of their programs fighting hunger.
In addition to them, corporate partners ” such as TNT – have supported this campaign every year and continue to raise awareness on the millions suffering from poverty and hunger. Since the “Walk the World” program began eight years ago, it has mobilized over 2 million participants and contributions have fed over 200,000 children.
925 million people worldwide are undernourished today, which means that 1 in every 7 people on earth goes to bed hungry each night.
The crises we have been facing recently ” from natural disasters to political conflicts ” are putting even more pressure on these people. And they are also adding tremendous burden on humanitarians to work faster & harder to minimize the suffering & hunger that is quickly spreading.
