Chongqing’s Tallest Building Announced In Dubai

Ding Jiemin, world-renowned engineer and expert in super high-rise buildings, announced his plans to construct one of the tallest buildings in the world in Chongqing, China, SUNAC A-ONE. The announcement was made at a conference last week in Dubai, the design capital of the world known for its miraculous and boundary-breaking architecture.

When completed, the SUNAC A-ONE will be composed of a 103-story, 470-meter super high-rise skyscraper with three 348.9-meter towers. The podium project stands in Jiangbeizui of Chongqing, forming a cluster of super high-rise skyscraper rarely seen in the world. When built, it will set a new record for the tallest building in Chongqing and will be listed in the top 20 tallest buildings in the world.

“Skyscrapers are at the peak of human construction technology, and the result of mature development and the combined experience of experts from all over the world. The impressive addition of SUNAC A-ONE to the world’s skyscrapers will have a significant impact on the design of buildings to come,” said Mr. Jiemin. “We chose to make this announcement in Dubai because design experts and architects look to Dubai for its mystical and courageous architecture. It’s a gathering place for some of the most well-known super high-rise experts in the world.”

As a financial height in the western China, Chongqing is located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, giving birth to brilliant history and culture. Therefore, the building’s designers have stressed the importance of the two rivers through the architectural language. The tower building gradually changes from the quadrilateral plane at the bottom to the circular plane on the top, while the tower’s body displays highlights the structural aesthetics. It’s microarc, concaved, curved surface adds flexibility to the towering volume. The two columns in A-word structure meet upward in a graceful arc, echoing the meaning of “double happiness, two rivers’ confluence” for Chongqing.

Further, by taking into consideration the energy consumption and safety issues of skyscrapers, the design goal of the A-ONE is to adopt the two-star green building and LEED gold standard as well as a variety of high-performance energy-saving measures to realize the ecological and humanized office and hotel environment.

The launch of this iconic project was announced at “Iconic Global Structures – What Can We Learn?” hosted in Dubai. It brought together the world’s leading structural engineers, architects and project participants to conduct in-depth case studies, explore different international design and construction needs and find globally connected solutions. It was the first-ever joint international conference hosted by the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE),

The conference focuses on how to simplify working on complex international projects when using multiple codes and working with teams trained to different benchmarks. Keynote speakers share experiences across three complex building styles: large public volume occupancy, unusual structures (where typical codes do not apply) and performance based design of tall buildings and it has specially invited Ron klemencic (the President of Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), John Peronto (Thornton Tomazetti Company) and many other experts to share together.

The design of SUNAC A-ONE is an impressive addition to Ding Jiemin’s portfolio, which already includes Shanghai Tower and Tangshan New Sports Center.

In the list of super-tall buildings in the world, China accounts for 50% in the top 10 and 53% in the top 100. Just as Burj Khalifa Tower for Dubai, 99 Hudson for the U.S., Petronas Towers for Malaysia, and Shanghai Tower for China, the A-ONE Project has an obvious influence on the development of Chongqing and even western China. There are reasons to believe that A-ONE will not only attract more attentions from professionals in the construction industry, but also serve as the name card of Chongqing, attracting more and more investors and tourists.
