Sharjah Museums Help Fish Out Waste To Protect UAE Seas

A team of 40 volunteers is diving to recover trash from the Fishermen Port in Khor Fakkan as part of Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) annual-marine cleanup campaign, “Because We Care”.

The ninth edition of the annual campaign was conducted by a team comprising volunteers from Sharjah Aquarium, part of SMA, Emirates Diving Center and in cooperation with Khor Fakkan Municipal Council.

The volunteers fished out two tons of trash including tires, fish and traps, carpets, and other boat equipment.

In addition to removing litter from the port, the campaign, which focused on the Khor Fakkan waterfront in its latest edition, educated fishermen and workers about waste products’ impact on marine life.

Government officials and volunteers briefed attendees about the proper methods to discard waste items, such as old fish traps, nets, and fishing lines.

Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Authority, said “Because We Care’ a social responsibility initiative that includes activities that are aimed at raising awareness about environment issues and instilling marine life conservation culture among members of the Sharjah community. we are committed to helping our community, especially families and children to get involved and make a difference.”

Curator of Sharjah Aquarium, Rashed Al Shamsi, said: “We focused our efforts on Khor Fakkan, the last main waterfront to be covered by this annual campaign.”

Plans are underway to conduct a second cleanup campaign this year at Souq Al Jubail in Sharjah.
