But language is much more than a way of communicating with software.<\/p>\n

Media.<\/p>\n
Culture.<\/p>\n
And increasingly, economic value.<\/p>\n
That broader idea sits at the centre of the fifth Congress of Arabic & Creative Industries, taking place on 20 September 2026 at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n
This year’s theme positions Arabic as infrastructure for the digital age rather than something technology companies merely need to translate.<\/p>\n
That distinction matters.<\/p>\n
If Arabic does not develop strongly inside artificial intelligence, digital publishing, gaming, education and online platforms, hundreds of millions of speakers risk consuming a technological future designed primarily around other languages.<\/p>\n
Arabic Is a Global Language<\/strong><\/p>\n Arabic is spoken across a vast geographic area.<\/p>\n North Africa.<\/p>\n The Gulf.<\/p>\n The Levant.<\/p>\n Parts of East Africa.<\/p>\n Large communities throughout Europe and elsewhere.<\/p>\n But Arabic is not one uniform digital dataset.<\/p>\n Dialects differ considerably.<\/p>\n Modern Standard Arabic exists alongside local speech.<\/p>\n Vocabulary changes across countries.<\/p>\n Historical texts use different structures.<\/p>\n Specialised terminology creates additional complexity.<\/p>\n For technology companies, this makes Arabic both an enormous opportunity and a difficult engineering challenge.<\/p>\n A system that technically \u201csupports Arabic\u201d may still perform badly for many actual Arabic infrastructure.<\/p>\n Datasets.<\/p>\n Terminology.<\/p>\n Digitised archives.<\/p>\n Speech resources.<\/p>\n Publishing.<\/p>\n Research.<\/p>\n High-quality content.<\/p>\n Translation Alone Is Not Enough<\/strong><\/p>\n One common approach to global technology is to build a product in English and translate the interface.<\/p>\n That works for simple software.<\/p>\n It becomes less effective when language itself is part of the product.<\/p>\n An AI assistant needs to understand meaning.<\/p>\n Humour.<\/p>\n Cultural context.<\/p>\n Formal and informal language.<\/p>\n Regional vocabulary.<\/p>\n An Arabic-speaking user should not feel they are interacting with an English system wearing an Arabic interface.<\/p>\n True localisation goes deeper.<\/p>\n This is especially important for education, media and government services where precise meaning matters.<\/p>\n The Creative Economy Depends on Intellectual Property<\/strong><\/p>\n Congress ACI also places strong emphasis on creative industries.<\/p>\n Books.<\/p>\n Film.<\/p>\n Television.<\/p>\n Gaming.<\/p>\n Music.<\/p>\n Digital media.<\/p>\n Publishing.<\/p>\n These sectors do more than produce culture.<\/p>\n They produce intellectual property.<\/p>\n A successful fictional character can become television content, merchandise, games and international licensing.<\/p>\n A book can become a film.<\/p>\n A game can become a franchise.<\/p>\n A music catalogue can generate revenue for decades.<\/p>\n Countries increasingly recognise creative intellectual property as an economic asset.<\/p>\n Arabic-speaking markets have enormous cultural resources but have not always converted those resources into globally scalable intellectual property.<\/p>\n That creates opportunity.<\/p>\n Gaming Could Become a Major Arabic Content Industry<\/strong><\/p>\n Gaming deserves particular attention.<\/p>\n The Middle East has a large young population and strong gaming demand.<\/p>\n Yet much of the content consumed in the region is created elsewhere.<\/p>\n Arabic-language games remain comparatively limited.<\/p>\n That can change.<\/p>\n Game development combines technology with storytelling, art, music, design and intellectual property.<\/p>\n A strong regional gaming industry could create jobs while also producing stories that reflect Arab culture in ways imported content cannot.<\/p>\n Localization matters too.<\/p>\n Players respond differently when a game communicates naturally in their language rather than offering awkward translated text.<\/p>\n Publishing Is Being Reshaped by Digital Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n The publishing industry faces its own transition.<\/p>\n Readers increasingly consume content through digital platforms.<\/p>\n Audiobooks expand accessibility.<\/p>\n AI can assist editing and translation.<\/p>\n Print-on-demand changes distribution.<\/p>\n Social media influences which books become popular.<\/p>\n At the same time, publishers need to protect intellectual property in an environment where content can be copied instantly.<\/p>\n Arabic publishing has another challenge.<\/p>\n Markets are spread across numerous countries with different distribution systems.<\/p>\n Digital platforms can reduce some of that fragmentation.<\/p>\n A book can potentially reach readers across the Arab world without depending entirely on physical bookstore networks.<\/p>\n AI Can Help Arabic Creators Reach Global Audiences<\/strong><\/p>\n Technology creates opportunities as well as risks.<\/p>\n Translation systems can help an Arabic writer reach international readers.<\/p>\n AI-assisted subtitling can help filmmakers distribute content globally.<\/p>\n Voice technology can make Arabic media more accessible.<\/p>\n Search systems can improve discovery of Arabic archives.<\/p>\n Creative tools can reduce production costs for smaller studios.<\/p>\n The challenge is ensuring these systems respect the language rather than flattening cultural differences.<\/p>\n Technology should expand creative possibilities, not make everything sound identical.<\/p>\n Abu Dhabi Is Building a Cultural Technology Conversation<\/strong><\/p>\n Abu Dhabi is an appropriate host for Congress ACI because the city has invested heavily in both culture and technology.<\/p>\n Saadiyat Island has become a major cultural district.<\/p>\n Museums and educational institutions create one part of the ecosystem.<\/p>\n Government investment in AI and digital industries creates another.<\/p>\n The Congress sits between those worlds.<\/p>\n It asks what happens when language, culture and technology become part of the same economic strategy.<\/p>\n
