\u00a0<\/b>Under the patronage\u00a0of\u00a0<\/b>His Excellency\u00a0<\/b>Dr. Salem Abdul Rahman Al\u00a0Darmaki<\/span><\/i>, Advisor to UAE Minister of Health and Prevention,\u00a0<\/span>MENA MedTech Forum, the region’s largest\u00a0forum for Medical Technology\u00a0came to a close\u00a0today, after two days of continuous deliberations and workshops to discuss the future of digital healthcare, and its opportunities and challenges for the region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span>xperts from\u00a0across the\u00a0world,\u00a0and\u00a0MedTech industry\u00a0executives\u00a0from\u00a0the MENA region,\u00a0pledged to join forces to boost digital transformation of healthcare systems across the region,\u00a0at the 4th\u00a0MENA MedTech Forum,\u00a0which took place at\u00a0Mohammed\u00a0Bin\u00a0Rashid Academic Medical Center in\u00a0Dubai Healthcare City\u00a0on 25th\u00a0and 26th\u00a0April.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Organized by Mecomed<\/span>\u00a0–\u00a0the medical devices, imaging and diagnostics trade association for the Middle East and Africa, the forum\u00a0also had experts address key topics\u00a0including cybersecurity for medical devices,\u00a0value-based healthcare,\u00a0unleashing talent potential\u00a0and\u00a0Innovative Digital Health Technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Delivering the keynote address on the role of governments in fostering science and\u00a0<\/span>medical\u00a0innovation,\u202fHis Excellency Dr. Salem Abdul Rahman Al\u00a0Darmaki<\/span>, Advisor to the UAE Minister of Health<\/span>\u00a0and Prevention, said,\u00a0“Healthcare needs innovation, not architectural creations. Right now, digitization\u00a0and innovation is a crucial driver of growth within this sector.\u00a0I’m glad that\u00a0organisations<\/span>\u00a0such as<\/span>\u00a0Mecomed, and\u00a0other industry representatives are actively\u00a0supporting\u00a0this agenda.\u00a0Digital health methods and applications are at the forefront of addressing\u00a0myriad healthcare challenges across many countries, including the increasing battle against chronic diseases and the pressure to reduce healthcare spend.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 4<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0edition of the annual forum was themed ‘global trend of healthcare digitization and its impact on the MENA region<\/b>‘.\u00a0While\u00a0many firms regionally\u00a0are working towards inducing the power of digital health within the sector, the promise of digital healthcare also raises legal and practical issues which require\u00a0regulations from the\u00a0industry and regulators\u00a0within\u00a0the MENA region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Technology and innovation have been a pivotal force in the growth of the medical industry, and in making significant contributions to the welfare of society. This region is poised for fast-tracked growth through innovation across all sectors<\/span>.\u00a0We believe\u00a0that\u00a0it is important to encourage discourse on crucial aspects that help regulate and pave the way for the future of the MedTech industry. This year, the MENA MedTech Forum discussed some effective solutions into how we can work together to create effective regulations\u00a0and deliver great value to\u00a0the patients of this region” said Dr. Rami Rajab, Chairman of Mecomed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Post the keynote, a panel discussion between\u00a0<\/span>Neil O’Flaherty,\u00a0Partner at\u00a0Baker\u00a0&\u00a0McKenzie,\u00a0Maher Abouzeid, President and CEO, Eastern Growth Markets, GE Healthcare;\u00a0and Jim Massey, Innovator, Healthcare Advisory Practice, Cerner Middle East, were seen\u00a0debating\u00a0the\u00a0current\u00a0benefits of digital healthcare in the MENA region and\u00a0how the industry can\u00a0address potential problems and pitfalls within\u00a0this emerging field.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0<\/span>engaging\u00a0seminar was that of\u00a0Paul Epping, Principal Consultant\u00a0at\u00a0Philips Healthcare, who\u00a0underpinned\u00a0the importance of cybersecurity for medical devices.\u00a0From manufacturing devices\u00a0and\u00a0developing software,\u00a0to\u00a0installing and connecting these\u00a0devices, all steps\u00a0need to\u00a0be secure and\u00a0easily\u00a0monitored.\u00a0Paul added,\u00a0“A medical device is\u00a0not\u00a0a stand-alone entity, but\u00a0is linked\u00a0to our hyper connected society.\u00a0Which\u00a0means that the data produced by,\u00a0and exchanged with other sources, are\u00a0exposed to various\u00a0risk\u00a0factors.\u00a0The entire process needs to be secure and regulated to ensure utmost\u00a0safety and security in the cyber world.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year,\u00a0<\/span>Mecomed\u00a0also focused on\u00a0value-based healthcare\u00a0to ensure optimal use of resources\u00a0wherein\u00a0the focus in decision-making includes a broader value perspective instead of a\u00a0mere\u00a0focus on price. In this session,\u00a0a panel representing different stakeholders provided\u00a0their insights\u00a0on\u00a0the benefits and challenges in implementing such a framework.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
