Enviromena Power Systems vice president Sander Trestain was awarded "Engineer of the Year" at a gala dinner in Dubai on Wednesday evening as part of the third annual MEP Awards organized by ITP's Construction Week publication. Mr. Trestain was recognized for his contributions to Enviromena's alternative energy projects which include the largest grid-connected solar power system ever constructed in the Middle East, a 10 MW solar photovoltaic power plant located at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.

The annual awards event is highly regarded throughout the region's engineering community, recognizing outstanding achievement in the mechanical, electrical and plumbing sectors. Enviromena was also shortlisted in the categories "Specialist Contractor of the Year" and "Most Sustainable Project of the Year".

Mr. Trestain commented "It's a great honour to be recognized in this forum. Large scale solar power projects are a team effort and I owe a great debt of gratitude to Enviromena's staff and partners who worked tirelessly to bring these alternative energy systems on line. And of course, none of these projects would be possible without the support and forward-looking energy policies of the Abu Dhabi government."

Judged by an esteemed panel of industry experts including senior executives from Ducab, Gifford Dubai, Arup Gulf Limited and Ashrae Falcon Chapter, the MEP Awards are based on a set of criteria that include commitment and leadership within the industry, project achievements and professional development.

Enviromena CEO Sami Khoreibi congratulated Mr.Trestain on his win explaining "It is wonderful to see this type of recognition for our team of highly talented engineers and project managers. The decision by MEP Middle East to select Mr. Trestain, an engineer from the solar industry for this award highlights the rapidly growing importance of alternative energy in the Middle East and North Africa. This demonstrates how crucial best practices in design, engineering and construction are to the wide-scale deployment of solar technologies."

The award concludes a highly successful year for Enviromena, which in 2009 has completed solar installations that offset over 18 000 tons of carbon emissions annually. The company was also awarded the "Power Plant Operator of the Year" and "Energy Efficiency" awards at the 2009 Middle East Power Plant Operator of the Year awards and CEO Sami Khoreibi was titled one of Arabian Businesses "Top 30 Under 30".
