Arabian Travel Market To Offer Winning Destination US$10,000 Worth Of Free Exhibition Space For Outstanding Contribution To Tourism Development In The Face Of Overwhelming Adversity

Dubai , UAE - April 22, 2007:  Reed Travel Exhibitions, organiser of Arabian Travel Market, the region’s premier travel and tourism exhibition, has announced that ten destinations have been short listed for this year’s New Frontiers Award. The unique award which consists of US$10,000 worth of complimentary exhibition space at Arabian Travel Market 2008 will be given to the destination that has made an outstanding contribution to tourism development in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Tom Nutley, Chairman, Reed Travel Exhibitions said, “The concept for the award was borne out of the remarkable achievements that have been observed over the last twenty four months. The way in which some destinations have recovered from overwhelming disasters was humbling and awe inspiring. In recognition of those super-human efforts, we wanted to salute their exceptional achievements. The reward is both pragmatic and a valuable contribution to increase their marketing efforts still further.”

The short-listed destinations were chosen considering a number of decisive factors such as, their utilisation of aid packages, support from local and national government, tangible efforts of recovery and the sheer determination of the human spirit. Sydney – Australia; Cancun – Mexico; Mozambique; Hawaii; Sharm Al Sheikh – Egypt; Vietnam; London; Northern Ireland; Lebanon and The Algarve - Portugal are all making tremendous strides after suffering from either man-made or natural disasters.

Judges are currently reviewing the shortlist to select three destinations that will go forward to the final round. The panel of judges is made up of industry professionals, representing global travel and tourism associations and journalists from leading travel publications.

Last year’s winner Phuket was honoured for its gritty determination to pull through following the devastating Tsunami in December 2004. The island's residents immediately started the clean-up effort and worked day and night to remove debris from the beaches. With the help and co-ordination of the central government and the efforts of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Phuket has now managed to rebuild its battered coastline and improve its shattered local economy.

The recipient will be announced during a special awards ceremony at the Arabian Travel Market’s annual exhibitors’ party, which will be held on 1 May 2007 at the Grand Hyatt Dubai. Representatives of the winning destination will be invited to attend the special ceremony and rewarded with US$10,000 worth of complementary exhibition space at Arabian Travel Market 2008.
