The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) launch their presentation of ‘Richard III – an Arab Tragedy’ on Thursday 8 February 2007 in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK. This is the RSC’s first Arabic production of a Shakespeare play. Sponsored by the National Projects Holding Co. of Kuwait, the play will be performed in Arabic with English surtitles as part of the RSC’s ongoing Complete Works Festival (8th to 17th February).
Kuwaiti director Sulayman Al-Bassam’s adaptation has the production set in the desert palaces of an unnamed Kingdom in the Arabian Gulf, and presents Shakespeare’s tragedy from a contemporary Islamic perspective.
Performed by a company of actors from Kuwait, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, the play is co-produced by The Culture Project (Kuwait).
Performances of ‘Richard III – an Arab Tragedy’ are expected to be presented in the Middle East later this year.
