The British University In Dubai Organizes Its Third Doctoral Research Conference

The British University in Dubai (BUiD) held its 3rd Doctoral Research Conference on Saturday 13 May 2017. In line with its commitment as the leading research -based University in the region, BUiD welcomed more than 70 postgraduate students who participated in the conference from different universities from the UAE and UK. Students' research presentations covered different areas of sustainability, project management, finance, IT and education. The conference was sponsored by Al Maktoum Foundation, Dubai International Academic City, and PMI UAE – Khaleeji Chapter.

The students, faculty members and visiting professors from UK universities were warmly greeted by BUiD's Vice Chancellor Professor Abdullah Alshamsi who stressed the importance of interaction between academics and students for the exchange of knowledge and ideas. He said that such events and conferences provide a perfect opportunity for facilitating this exchange.

Keynote speaker, Professor Stephen McKinney, leader of the research and teaching group, Creativity, Culture and Faith in the School of Education in the University of Glasgow, discussed in his presentation the development of the Human Rights legislation on the rights for school education and the four 'As' of the right to education: Availability; Accessibility; Acceptability and Adaptability. Emeritus Professor of Construction Management at Loughborough University, Professor Roland McCaffer, delivered a keynote speech about 'Working with Industry-University &Companies', while Mr. Brian Chung, Research Projects Coordinator at Al Qasimi Foundation, gave an overview of current studies at Al Qasimi Foundation.

The students delivered their research presentations through different sessions chaired by BUiD’s professors who directed discussion based on questions put by the audience. Other presentations were also made by Skype from students from the UK.

BUiD Dean of Research, Prof Ashly Pinnington, said, 'This Conference provides an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase their research and share their findings with postgraduate students from other universities from the UAE and UK. Participating in specialist doctoral conferences is important for refining high-level skills and gaining more experience in presenting and discussing scientific research.

At the end of the conference, students' presentations were assessed by a committee of academics from BUiD. Six students received Best Paper Awards, which were given by Professor Alshamsi and Professor Pinnington.

BUiD offers Postgraduate programmes in both doctoral and masters levels. The doctoral programmes are offered in five areas: Education, Project Management, Architecture and the Sustainable Built Environment, Computer Science, and Business Management. Masters programmes are offered in specialist areas of Engineering, IT, Management, Finance, Law and Education.
